SOCIAL PREMIUM

On top of the Fairtrade price, Kuapa Kokoo(a co-operative of over 45 000 farmers in Ghana, West Africa) receives about £14 per sack of cocoa they sell to spend on community projects. This is called the social premium (All products with the Fairtrade Mark pay a social premium to farmers). Kuapa Kokoo has used the social premium from Fairtrade chocolate to build many things, which have helped whole communities.

HELPING COMMUNITIES

The social premium is used by farmer organisations to pay for things like:

Clean water wells

New schools

Farmer training

Corn mills

Better health care

CLEAN WATER

In some areas of Ghana up to 75% of people depend on streams, rivers, ponds and open wells for drinking water. The social premium from Fairtrade chocolate has made a huge difference to some villages by being used to construct clean water wells.

The well in the picture was built in a village called Fenaso Domeabra in Ghana. Previously the people in the village had to fetch Not only has the well has improved the health of villagers by providing clean water. It has also given local children much more free time because they don’t have to go so far to fetch the water. This means that children have more time to study and play! their water from a far away source which was polluted by a poison called ‘arsenic’ coming from a nearby goldmine.

COMIC RELIEF SAYS...

Comic Relief looks for long-term solutions to the bigger problems that affect the world's poorest people. Fairtrade is one of these solutions, because it enables poor farmers to build themselves a better future and guarantees them longer-term security. Comic Relief launched Dubble as part of its belief that fairer trade is crucial in the fight against poverty.
