THE TRADE

the trade

Make the sacks your background.

Once the beans are dry, farmers pack them into sacks and take them to the Kuapa Kokoo village recorder. The beans are weighed and the farmer is paid.

The recorder, who is elected by the farmers, holds a really important and trusted position in the village. They weigh the cocoa, making sure each sack weighs 62.5kg. Kuapa Kokoo recorders can be trusted, but cocoa farmers describe being cheated Cocoa farmers are sometimes cheated when they sell their cocoa to non-Fairtrade buyers, who fix the weighing scales to show a lower reading than the actual weight of their cocoa beans. in the past by recorders from other companies.

When the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative of farmers sell their cocoa beans for Fairtrade chocolate, they are guaranteed a fair price When you buy Dubble and Divine, you know that cocoa farmers are guaranteed a fair price for their crop. The price is set by the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation which is an independent worldwide Fairtrade Standard setting and Certification organisation www.fairtrade.net at about £56 per sack of cocoa.

On top of the Fairtrade price, Kuapa Kokoo receives about £14 per sack of cocoa they sell to spend on community projects. This extra money is called the ‘Social Premium’ Kuapa Kokoo has used the social premium from Fairtrade chocolate to build many things which have helped whole communities like clean water wells and new schools..
